The Finals and Closing Ceremony of 'Dual-Culture Cup'

The 1st University Elites English Debate Competition

On March 15, 2014, the Finals and Closing Ceremony of Dual-Culture Cup’- The 1st University Elites English Debate Competition organized by CUPSA, jointly with  Junior Chamber International -Dragon and Rotary Club of Kowloon Northeast, was successfully held in the Lecture Theatre, Shaw College of CUHK.

 

It was a great honor to have distinguished guests from universities departments attending the ceremony, including Prof. Dennis K.P. NG, the Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor, University Dean of Students, Mr. Raymond Y.C. LEUNG,Director of Student Affairs, Mr. K.K. HON, President of JCI Dragon, and etc. Both Mr. K.K. HON and Miss Adrian K.M. LEUNG, the University Affairs General Executive cum director of this Debate Competition of CUPSA gave an opening speech, expressing their affirmation to the hard efforts staff spent in the late three months, the engagement and professionalism of debaters, as well as the best wishes to the success of the event.

  

The one-hour debate was intense and eye-catching. The stance for each team are as followed: Affirmative: CUHK VS Negative: HKU, and the topic was: One-way permit holders that have not stayed in Hong Kong for 7 years should be eligible to apply for Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA). Representatives from the affirmative team stressed on equality and human rights, while the negative team underlined that to obtain the rights require a proof of willingness to take obligation. Their sharp ideas, flexibility in speeches and their fluent English presentation have greatly attracted audience.

 

Eventually, representatives from HKU nosed out CUHK with the score of 253:242, becoming the Final Champion of ‘Dual-Culture Cup’- The 1st University Elites English Debate Competition. The CUHK team won the second place and HKUST the third. Jocelyn Heng from HKU won the title of Best Debater. In the following award ceremony, distinguished guests presented trophy and prize to winners and other outstanding participants.
